"Bailey" (née "Brother") was born on the 4th of July, 2018 in a Northern CA puppy mill that is, thankfully, all but shut down now. Through a chain of rescue orgs, he arrived in Solvang early in September, at 8 weeks, near death from parvovirus. We raised funds from private parties, and he was rushed to an emergency hospital for several days, and afterward came into intensive medical foster care at our home.
Weeks later, after he was cleared by his veterinarian, he began socialization with children, cats, dogs, adults, and new locations. He excelled in all these areas. (Happy to discuss this in detail.) Many families asked to adopt him, and one in SLO County was chosen in November. After 2 months with his very active new family, tons of enrichment experiences, and 6 weeks of professional positive reinforcement training, his family with regret had to return him to us on January 6th, as they face a family issue that will require their full attention and they felt overwhelmed caring for a 6 month old puppy.
Bailey's trainer, Teah Anders, at Gentle Touch Pet Training, had glowing things to say about him, and he now has his elementary level positive-reinforcement clicker training graduation certificate and photo. Anne Swan of Goleta Valley Dog Club immediately reached out to offer continuing training for him and we will be enrolling in classes there ASAP. Shadow's Fund founder's Jill and Cody Rackley responded the same day with offers to help find a match. Isabelle Gullo of CARE4Paws instantly had a great lead. Help is flowing in and so are the inquiries.
Right now, 1-12-19, Bailey is 6 months old, 48 lbs, neutered, vaccinated, chipped, healthy, gorgeous with a lush soft coat, and he is a super smart learner and a fun-loving playmate. He is still very much a big puppy who needs continuing training and lots of exercise. He is accustomed to several walks a day and lots of play time, although he likes his crate naps, too. He walks well on a leash, stays nearby when off leash (in safe places), is clicker trained, crate trained, has decent recall response (needs ongoing reinforcement), and knows basic commands - all at a 6 month old level or slightly better.
His DNA results show that he is 37.5% Siberian Husky, 25% Malamute, 12.5% German Shepherd, and 25% "Breed Groups": Asian, Herding, Wild Canids, Guarding.
We adore him, and are determined to find him a high caliber home, one that is willing to carry on with his training and get him through his crazy puppyhood with love and fun! A stable, safe environment and dog/puppy experience are vital. Good fencing is a must. Although he looks like an adult, he is not yet ready to be left alone all day, so he will need an owner with time to be with him, or the ability to take him to work. He will benefit immensely from continuing with positive reinforcement classes, as the foundation has already been laid. It is important to "Northern Breed" dogs in particular. He is friendly with dogs, non-aggressive with cats he has met, and good with children. To meet Bailey, contact me by email and we will make a time to talk first. An application, a brief home check, and a rehoming fee of $100 are necessary. Bailey is a super wonderful, hilarious guy. You will really enjoy meeting him!
