Day of Caring Overview

United Way of Santa Barbara County (UWSBC) has hosted Day of Caring (DOC)
every year in September since 1992. It is a community focused event where
UWSBC recruits more than 1,300 volunteers who work at local charitable
organizations, doing a variety of projects including: landscaping, gardening,
painting, cleaning, etc. DOC provides direct & indirect benefit to people in need,
including: youth, disabled, seniors, homeless, hospice clients, low-income families,
and many more.
There are volunteer teams and individual volunteers. They come from
corporations, youth clubs, schools, churches, charitable organizations and families.
These volunteers help charities complete projects they would not otherwise have
the resources for. Volunteers are attracted to this opportunity because it gives
them a chance to give back to non-profit organizations that do so much for the
community. The day begins with a kick-off breakfast and rally followed by four
hours of volunteer work at different locations. It is estimated that in 2017, about
$250,000 worth of labor was completed in Santa Barbara County.
Day of Caring assistants will gain valuable experience in large scale event
management and non-profit administration. More specifically, interns will have the
opportunity to engage with community organizations, secure sponsorships and gift
in kind donations, create marketing materials, and strategize logistics for the
largest volunteer event of the year.
