The Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse mission is to substantially reduce alcoholism and drug abuse through comprehensive programs of prevention, intervention, treatment, relapse prevention, and advocacy. The Fighting Back Community Coalition was started over 10 years ago to directly address the issues of drugs and alcohol from a community perspective. Fighting Back is comprised of individuals from the community, businesses, schools, law enforcement, non-profit, and political sectors. A Steering Committee oversees the coalition and all activities undertaken by the Fighting Back Task Forces. Currently there are five active Task Forces within Fighting Back (Criminal Justice, Media, Mentors, Public Policy, and Secondary Schools).

An internship with Fighting Back is now being offered to registered college/university students. Help make positive change within the community and gain valuable experience in coalition building, advocacy, public campaigns, event planning, and policy work. Fighting Back Internship duties include, but are not limited to:
� Attending Task Force meetings
� Researching strategic campaigns and grants that can provide funding
� Presenting and providing recommendation reports to the various Task Forces
� Serving as a liaison between students/university campuses- Network with campus newspapers, student government, and organizations, help gain student voice/input, disseminate information and awareness about alcohol and drug issues
� Working with local media outlets, elected officials, area schools, law enforcement, and other drug and alcohol related organizations to build a safer, healthier, and drug-free community by reducing the demand for alcohol and other drugs

Christian Prison Ministry needs volunteers to write to inmates! (Santa Barbara)

These inmates and many more wrote to out ministry and asked for a Christian to disciple them.

The Downtown Organization, a non-profit, is seeking volunteers to help staff this year�s Holiday Parade, Unwrap the Magic, held Friday, December 4th from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Community Service hours are available to High School Students!

Volunteers are needed as Parade Monitors to help with staging, crowd control, and the flow of the parade. You must be able to stand outside in nighttime temperatures for the duration of the shift.

Volunteers are given a long-sleeve Parade Volunteer t-shirt to wear during the parade and keep afterward, as well as refreshments prior to the Parade.

A 30 minute volunteer training will take place on Tuesday, December 1st at 5:30pm.

Snowy Plovers Docent Volunteers Needed at Coal Oil Point Reserve!

Can you spare 2 hours per week? If so, you could make a significant contribution
as a Volunteer Docent or an Intern for the Snowy Plover Docent Program.

Plover Docents are trained volunteers who facilitate public outreach and education about the western snowy plover, a threatened shorebird species, and its habitat at Sands Beach, part of Coal Oil Point Reserve.

The Snowy Plover Docent Program (SPDP) was started in 2001 to assist
with the protection of the Snowy Plovers at Coal Oil Point Reserve, and to raise
awareness in the community of the importance of the preservation of this
species and its habitat.

Docents provide a personal and friendly contact for beach users. They promote public interest and understanding, and in turn, dramatically increase the effectiveness of other plover/tern management efforts at the Reserve.

Trainings occur every month on a Saturday at the Cliff House at Coal Oil Point Reserve,

My troubles were crippling, and although I will accept to help those who are in less dire situations, I will first help those who are experiencing something of a similar magnitude.

Domestic Violence Solutions for Santa Barbara County needs a few good client advocates--individuals willing to respond with police to 9-1-1 domestic violence calls, and support clients in recovering from domestic violence. Other duties include supporting clients in obtaining legal and other services to allow them to gain stability and self-sufficiency to move on with their lives. By state law, employees and volunteers providing direct service to agency clients must have 40 hours of training in domestic violence prevention and client advocacy. Training is generally provided once a year in Santa Barbara. Training begins November 3.

� Earn the 40 Hour DV Training Certification required to provide direct service in a domestic violence agency.
� Learn evidenced based strategies for counseling & client advocacy/case management practices that support recovery from domestic violence.
� Increase your understanding of how domestic violence, mental health and substance abuse intersect, and the effective practices of trauma-sensitive and culturally competent service delivery.

The goals of the training are to inform participants about domestic violence; challenge myths, beliefs and attitudes that perpetuate domestic violence; and call participants to action. Graduates will receive a certificate of completion that is a primary qualification for working or volunteering with clients in any domestic violence shelter, crisis hotline, or domestic violence counseling agency, statewide.

Who should attend?

Interested members of the community, therapists, social workers, medical personnel, law enforcement personnel, alcohol and drug rehabilitation case workers, concerned friends and family members, and prospective volunteers are likely participants. The training costs $150, and includes a comprehensive course manual. Scholarships are available for participants able to make a standard 12-month volunteer commitment of 6 on-call hours a week.

The 40-Hour Training will take place Nov. 3-14 and Jan. 5-16, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (7:00 � 9:00 p.m.) plus Saturday (9:00 � 4:00). A limited number of make-up lessons are available for those who must miss a training day.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Volunteers Needed (Santa Barbara County)

Family Service Agency's Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Barbara County mentoring program matches volunteers with children who need and want a positive role model, a mentor, and a friend. The pairs spend 6-8 hours a month together in the community, playing sports, working on homework, attending fun events and pursuing similar interests while forming the kind of valuable one-to-one friendship that the children need.

Our volunteers are awesome! Join other great volunteers who give a young person someone to look up to and learn why so many of our volunteers say, "I get back so much more than I give." Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is fun and rewarding! You can do the things you already enjoy but share fun activities with a child, 7-17. Research hs shown that children who participate in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program are less likely to engage in risky behavior and more likely to stay on a healthy path.

Volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds including college students, professionals and couples. Find out how you can become a Big Brother or Big Sister and make a positive impact in the life of a child. We are looking for volunteers that are willing to commit 6 hours per month for 6 months at the county shelter. Whether doing laundry, cleaning yards and kennels, or walking, training and spending calming time with the shelter dogs, our volunteers are the heart and soul of K-9 PALS.

ORIENTATION:
Volunteer Orientations are scheduled on Saturdays at 1:00pm (approx time is 45 minutes).

Organizing sport and art activities for children and preparing a Christmas and New year festival

December 11, 2009 - January 2, 2010

The volunteers will be involved in organizing activities for children aged 5-14 that facilitate group dynamics, such as games, sports, story-telling, performing arts, etc. The project participants will also organize a Christmas and New year children's festival. This program is designed for children aged 5 -14 with the goal of developing them holistically through physical, intercultural and social activities which aims at enhancing the child's inborn talents and enabling them to acquire new skills and knowledge in a conducive environment. By participating in this program children are exposed to various life skills.
Study part: The role of children in facing the future.
Free time activities: An over night stay on Zanzibar; Bagamoyo historical sites; Mikumi National Park to view wild animals; beach.
Location: Magole, Temeke. Temeke District is the southernmost of three districts in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, with Kinondoni located to the far North of the city, and Ilala being located in the downtown of Dar es Salaam. To the East is the Indian Ocean and to the South and West is the Coastal region of Tanzania.

Internship Opening (Santa Barbara, Downtown)

EF International School of English is seeking a responsible college student to intern in our admin/reception office.

We are a globally recognized English language school located in Santa Barbara since 1982. Our students come from all over the world (Japan, Brazil, France, Switzerland, and Saudi Arabia) to learn English and learn about life in the US.

What we need is someone who has 15 to 20 hrs. a week to work alongside the schools Administrative Coordinator. You would be assisting with student admissions, health insurance, immigration, filing, and answering students� general questions.
