I would like to invite you and your child to be part of a basic research project examining infants’ knowledge that will be taking place at the Cognition and Development Lab at UCSB. We are interested in how infants and children think and learn about basic everyday things (such as plants, animals and tools), and have previously published studies in leading child development journals. Here are some important details of the current project:
• The research is a basic investigation of infants’ knowledge and understanding.
• We are seeking infants from 3 to 12 months of age.
• Participation in this project includes one session, lasting one hour.
• You and your child will receive $20 per hour for your participation.
• Each session will be run at the Cognition and Development Lab at UCSB. We will arrange parking for you on campus and reimburse you for any parking expenses you incur.
• During each session, we will present your child with different objects (either real objects or images on a computer screen) and measure the time s/he looks at each object. All objects will be child-safe.
• You will remain with your child at all times during the session.
• Children usually enjoy the sessions. However, you are free to discontinue your child’s participation at any time. We will only begin a session with your child if s/he is willing to participate.
• The identity and contact information of you and your child will be protected at all times.
• No individual names will be attached to the records of your child’s responses. We are interested in group performance and not individual assessment (for example, how three month olds as a group might differ from six month olds).
• There are no known risks associated with participating in this study.
If you and your child would like to participate in this study, or if you would like more information, please submit a web form at http://ucsb-cdl.org/parents/ or contact the Cognition and Development Laboratory at 805-893-8018 or cdl@ucsb-cdl.org.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. If you have any questions regarding research subject rights, please contact Kathy Graham at graham@omni.ucsb.edu or at 805-893-3807.
