Do you get satisfaction from empowering people in your community with knowledge so they can solve problems and make informed choices? Do you want to help seniors and people with disabilities who have questions about Medicare and other health-related issues? Then become a HICAP volunteer! The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) needs volunteers in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties to provide counseling and advocacy services to Medicare Beneficiaries.
HICAP counselors assist Medicare Beneficiaries with Medicare claims, appeals, and denials, or delays of service or treatment. They also give free, unbiased information about Medicare Advantage plans, supplemental insurance, and more.
You don't need to have experience with insurance or Medicare to become a volunteer counselor. All you need is patience, good listening skills, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly and effectively. HICAP will provide training about Medicare and support you in your work.
HICAP will begin a six week training for volunteer counselors in Arroyo Grande this June. Volunteer Counselor Orientation will be held on June 3rd. A Volunteer Medicare Counselor training is also planned in the Santa Barbara area starting in August.Community members interested in attending the counselor orientation are encouraged to contact HICAP toll free at 1-800-434-0222. All are welcome to attend the orientation and find out more about what you can do to serve your community. If, after the orientation, you decide this is not what you are interested in there is no other obligation.
HICAP needs more bilingual volunteers to help us better serve Spanish speaking Medicare Beneficiaries.
