REACH OUT AND READ STORYTIMER
RESPONSIBILITIES
•Reads aloud to children either at the Franklin medical clinic in Santa
Barbara or at the Carpinteria medical clinic.
•Prepares for the session which includes: choosing books to be read from
the library nearby or the in clinic reading collection, familiarizing yourself
with the books chosen and practicing reading out loud.
•At the session: reads the selected books; interacts with participants and
parents; provide library card applications and information on using our
local public library; inform parents about ESL (English as a Second
Language) classes in the local area and one on one Adult Literacy
tutoring; and counts and logs the number of participants and parents.
THE DIFFERENCE YOU WILL MAKE TO THE LIBRARY
•Help to introduce young people and their parents to the library and
assist them to learn the joys of the library and reading. Provide local
children and their parents with the opportunity for fun, enjoying each
other, and meeting new people.
VOLUNTEER QUALIFICATIONS
•Is honest, reliable, punctual, enthusiastic, energetic and flexible. Is
courteous and friendly to story time participants and their parents.
•Enjoys working with small groups of children and parents.
•Is familiar with children’s literature.
•Able to work in the indoor medical clinic.
•Ability to speak and read Spanish is highly desirable.
COMMITMENT REQUIRED
•Two (2) hours per week for a minimum of one (1) year.
