that the first sb CL discussion in the last several months happens to be over the comments about blues pianists is somewhat disturbing, considering that CLEARLY the most iniquitous statement from the original post was:

-Musicians who are past the 'it's my art' stage of performing. We gig, we play what people want to hear and dance to. It keeps us in high demand. Smart. Period.

first of all, the point of blues and jazz is not to get up there and let one guy show his shit off-- the point is that everyone knows the "standards" or the 12-bar format and everyone can bring their BEST shit to the table... if you were in a 'blues' band that didn't afford you that opportunity, you were in a shitty blues band... there are some AMAZING players in the bay area-- drummers, bassists, keyboard players, "rhythm gutiarists" even--- who all show up to give their all and WOW people....... THAT is the essence of blues and jazz--- working your ass off so that you can go live in the MOMENT of music and do something different in the confines of such outlined structure...

now, as for the comments above......... all i can say is that if you THINK this way, then you are not only what is WRONG with the santa barbara music scene but you are what is WRONG with all of music...
even if you're playing top-40 crap to a bunch of drunken 50-somethings in a dance hall/wedding reception at 7pm on a saturday night, you can still BRING your art..... if you don't create or contribute to the ART of humanity, then what are you doing??? plucking strings to make money in a 2% cooler way than the guy sitting behind a desk all day........

There are several great, important, influential blues keyboard players who recorded on Blue Note in the 50's and 60's-roughly the same time as the great Chicago blues guys-Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf,etc who recorded on Chess. As a guitarist, I am inspired by these pianists, and play their riffs just as much as Stevie Ray, Clapton, etc. Do yourself and everyone else a favor by checking out blues pianists Wynton Kelly, Sonny Clark, Bobby Timmons, Horace Silver, Red Garland, and don't forget funky Hammond organ grooves of Jimmy Smith!

So funny how people takes things so close to heart. My earlier response is coming from a keboardist - with roughly 25 years of playing experience. Sure Blues is great for guitarists...its mainly guitar based. But for many of us keys players its filler, same song different key.

Just see how tough it is to some up with a list of big name blues keyboardists compared to about any other genre. There is a reason for that. Give me funk and /or soul/r&b any day..shit even classical. Now THATS fun for a keyboardist.

Ok, looks like if you play keys in this town you've become as rare as a cheap house. Don't cop attitude but if you are good, you apparently have some band choices. If you like the following, consider us:

-We're a band with real musicians, not garage-band wannabe hobbyists who just cover stuff and go 'oh golly I guess we sound pretty good let's gig'. We just happen to support ourselves with real jobs so our families can eat and wear shoes. That's good because we're stable and our gear is bitchin'. We're no longer music careerists wining about not getting paid enough. Don't you be either.

-Musicians who are past the 'my blessed originals or nothing' stage of performing. We gig, we play what people want to hear and dance to. It keeps us in high demand. Smart. Period.

-We are not lame. Our sound is not mamby-pamby. We play with guts, grit, skill and attitude. Our performances don't make you yawn. We move, sweat, crawl, jump, growl, grimace, and yet stop you in your tracks with a ballad.

-We want a reasonable commitment. Once a week rehearsals and the gigs. That's it. If spouses/kids/jobs occasionally cause a conflict that's OK...for cryin' out loud we're not unreasonable and we all have lives. Geez.

-We don't care if you are male, female, or Klingon. Commitment, attitude, and fit rules regardless of your plumbing. We are all grownups after all.

-We have a band culture. We take the music very seriously and it manifests itself in our performances. We do not take each other seriously, and it too manifests itself in our performances. I'm an experienced guitar repair tech available for all common problems found with electric guitars. I currently work for a company here in town doing a large variety of different things from CNC work such as body, neck, and fretboard cutting, sanding and buffing guitars after paint, leveling and dressing the frets, electronics work (I wire up every one of our guitars from scratch) hardware installation, and the final setup including truss rod, bridge and nut height and intonation adjustments. I've worked on guitars for over 4 years now in addition to going to a school in Hollywood called the Guitar Craft Academy. I've worked for various companies including ESP doing setup and repair work and repaired professionally at music stores as well. My rates are flexible and I have no "bench fees" or other mandatory charges. I'm doing this in my spare time and any fee is up to me, and you.

Record one song for free at The Sound Lab on the first sunday of every month(May 4). We are doing this on a first come first recorded basis. You will be given aprox. 20min of time to record. The more prepared you are the more time we will have for the mix down. Everyone is invited to come, between the hours of 11am and 7pm. ALL talent levels and ALL types of music are welcome. After you have completed your song, we will put it on a CD and the rest is up to you.

Last month we recorded 10 songs and we are hoping to do even more on sunday. All songs were acoustic and we are hoping that someone plugs in this month. Also we would like to see some rappers.

The Sound Lab is a new local studio and we are trying to give back to the locals. We provide profesional recording with Pro Tools and an experienced sound engineer. We also have a record label and if your talent is undeniable, this could be a great chance to get noticed. If you are just out to have some fun or if you already have a label that is great too. ALL are invited.

The Sound Lab is also available for practice space @ $25/hr and for recording @ $50/hr

This is a bit last minute but I decided to donate a small guitar, a tambourine, and Kazoos to a one room school in the south pacific town of Punta Banco, south of Pavones. They have no music program because they have no instruments. (The tropics is hard on wooden instruments so please we just want inexpensive instruments)
