Maclaren to Recall 1 Million Strollers
Fears of Children Getting Fingers Amputated Sparks Recall Dating Back to 1999

A major stroller manufacturer is set to make a massive recall Tuesday over concerns that children can have their fingertips sliced in a hinge.

Maclaren will recall all strollers dating back to 1999 - one million in total - a source tells the New York Daily News.

According to Maclaren: "We felt it was in the interest of customer safety to quickly develop a solution to this potential problem." The company adds in its press release that, "the solution was developed with cooperation from the Consumer Product Safety Commission."

Twelve children who allegedly had their fingertips chopped off after getting caught in the hinge sparked the recall, the newspaper reports.

"Stop using it immediately," CBS News medical correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton advises parents who own a Maclaren stroller. Ashton, however, said that the company plans to send parents a protective kit to place over the hinge.

Additionally, Maclaren states: "Until the kit arrives and you have fitted it, you should use extra care when folding and unfolding the strollers and be sure children's hands are well clear of all mechanisms."

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which plans to announce the recall Tuesday, declined to comment.

Stroller recalls aren't unusual for the government agency. For example, the commission in August recalled about 41,000 strollers made by the company Baby Jogger because certain models used faulty buckles, which raised concerns that children could fall from the strollers.

Companies are required under federal law to alert the agency if they discover information about the safety of their products, according to the commission's Web site. The commission can hold companies accountable for not doing so.

For example, Costco agreed in 2001 to pay $1.75 million in fines to the commission in a settlement deal. The company, which the commission said was the largest manufacturer of strollers at the time, faced charges of not notifying the commission about defects with its cribs, strollers, car seat carriers and high chairs.

The commission lists its product recalls online. A search of its available stroller recalls, which date back to 1977, shows this is Maclaren's first recall.

This is a used Gerry brand baby carrier backpack we inherited from my sister-in-law. We already have two others, so this one is up for grabs.
There was a recall on the seat part in 2000, because really little infants can slide out of the leg hole; I don't know if my SOL did the replacement, or bought this long after the recall.

My loss is your gain! I think these things retail for $65 and up. I also believe that Evenflo brand took over the production a couple of years ago.

It looks to be in good shape otherwise.

Do you have left over baby things in your garage that you've been hanging onto "just in case" someone needs them? We have a place that will take them off of your hands for someone who does need them. An exciting new non-profit group, Mothers' Helpers, is dedicated to helping new moms who need baby items to care for their babies. Our goal is to gather and receive baby items to give to new moms or moms-to-be who are in need of essential baby items. We are parents who understand how difficult raising a baby is under the best circumstances, let alone when you don't have basic things to meet and support the needs of your baby. We are looking for new or gently used baby items. Anything you think a new mom can use for her infant is welcome. We aren't repairmen, so for safety reasons we can't accept anything needing repairs. We can arrange pick up or have you drop stuff off in Santa Barbara, Solvang and Santa Maria. We are tax exempt and can give you a receipt for your donation.
